New Spaces

Back in November we randomly put our house on Zillow's Make Me Move to see what we could sell it for.  Four weeks later, it was sold and we had moved out!  It happened fairly quickly, we did not expect it to actually happen at all.  We did it just to play around.  Now five months later we've settled in to our new home in a new city, but not far from where we were.  This meant creating a new play space for my son.  I have to be honest, I wasn't as motivated this time around.  Probably because I was unpacking boxes and arranging an entire home!     The new house has one bedroom downstairs, we chose to make that the playroom because it's the main living floor.  I used a lot of the same furniture but incorporated a few new things.

The downstairs bedroom we are using as a play room has tiled flooring.  I do not like tile in bedrooms, so we bought those large (24 x 24) foam tiles from BJ's Warehouse Club and covered the room with the tiles.  This makes it safer than having a hard surface floor in a playroom.  I don't have the tiles on one side of the room because their thickness prevented the closet doors from opening.
The room is set up different and slightly smaller than the old play room so I had to move things around a number of times to get it the way I wanted.  These photos show a messy room because my son was just playing in here a few minutes before snapping the photo.  I love that he can play and then I can just shut the door if people come over. No, not with him inside...  No mess to be seen behind a closed door!  the closet is filled with unopened toys, a bookshelf with my old classroom picture books, arts and craft supplies, and larger ride on toys.
In the old house we had an Ikea bookshelf in our foyer with nice wicker baskets.  It doesn't match our new layout, so I bought new bins and put it in the playroom as extra storage space.  I have the TV anchored on top, the bottom row bins are from Ikea as well, and the top row are plastic bins from the Target $ section.

Playroom

A couple weeks ago we got rid of our guest bed by donating it to a young couple who will be moving in together next year when they get married!  We don't live in a huge house, so taking that bed out of our guest room really opened that room up and gave us options.  I decided to make the room in to a playroom for my son.  I figured that I would need a good space to play and learn with him.  I realize this is not an option for everyone.  Once we have another child, this room will probably become my son's room to make room for a baby.  Here's what I did:

This bookshelf has family history.  My grandfather built a bookshelf in 1957 for my dad.  Eventually that bookshelf was passed down to me.  Over the years it has been painted and sanded over and over again!  I had it in my classroom for the last 9 years and figured it would be a great addition to the new playroom.  So I spent two days repainting it for my son.  Here are before and after shots!

Not bad if I don't say so myself :)

Then I removed the "country bumpkin" wall border that has been on the walls since we purchased the house.  Previous owners had a real cute theme in this room, but it doesn't work for us.  So I bought some alphabet border from Amazon and re-did it.  It was pre-pasted border.  All I had to do was wet the back, then smooth it on in place.  This took 3/4 of a day to do!

I acquired this toy shelf through Scholastic Book orders.  As a teacher I earned "bonus points" from my students and my own personal orders.  I had saved my points for years to be able to reach the upper levels of "rewards."  I was able to redeem my points for this shelf as well as two chairs (one of which is next to the bookshelf, see photos below.)
